The unique garden and castle weddings are also popular.
Kishiwada Castle was built in 1334. Although the current castle tower is a recreation, you can see the traces of ancient times in the stone wall and moat. Not only can you look at materials that can help you understand the history of the Kishiwada Castle and castle town, you can also try on the armored helmets and sleeveless coats worn over armor that samurai wore in battle. How about getting some photos of you as a military commander? Also, the castle tower is popular as a wedding venue, and it is said that visitors to Japan have put on traditional Japanese clothing and held wedding ceremonies.
Pamphlets and voice guidance for Kishiwada Castle are available in English, Chinese, and Korean. You can ask for explanations of castle highlights and the view from the castle tower.
Kishiwada Danjiri float festival and closely related shrines
Founded in 1362, this historical shrine is located very near Kishiwada Castle. Amaterasu-Omikami, a sun goddess related to agriculture, and Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a god related to the dispersion of disease, are worshiped here.
Kishiki Jinja Shrine is the local deity of Kishiwada Castle and has a deep relationship with the Kishiwada festival (also known as the Kishiwada Danjiri float festival). It is said that the Danjiri float festival was originally a Shinto ritual to make offerings to the gods. During the Danjiri float festival in September, decorative portable shrines of neighboring towns can be seen being purified in front of the archway of Kishiki Jiinja Shrine. You can freely view miniature decorative shrines handmade by portable shrine artists that decorate the main shrine.
Also, the shrine is also known as a matchmaker god, and an endless number of worshipers pray for eternal vows using two red and white threads called “chigiri” threads. Wedding ceremonies can be held in the austere atmosphere of the main building.
A specialty museum to enjoy a festive spirit year-round.
In Kishiwada, the Kishiwada Danjiri float festival is so important that it is said that the whole year is for the festival. This museum teaches you all about the history and structure of this festival.
There are various real decorative portable shrines on display, including portable shrines made at the beginning of the 1800s, and large-sized multi-vision systems and 3-D videos let you really experience the impact of the festival. The elaborate traditional Japanese straight-sleeved coats, various miniature portable shrines, and delicate carving on the portable shrines are also not to be missed. You can climb on the roof of a portable shrine and feel like a main festival performer, as well as experience the musical instruments, drums, and bells used in the festival. Also, the souvenir shop has a full lineup of miniature portable shrines, fans, key holders, and other festival goods.
Furthermore, the festival is held in September and October depending on the participating towns. Generally, the festival in September is more well-known, but people also attend the festival in October because it’s easier to watch from a closer distance.
The origin of Kishiwada comfort food “kashimin-yaki”.
We recommend that visitors looking for casual local cuisine try kashimin-yaki, which is only available in Kishiwada. Torimi is the origin of kashimin-yaki. Kashimin-yaki may look like a Japanese pancake at first glance, but its special feature is the use of chicken meat and fat mince. Enjoy the crunchy texture of the chicken meat and the full-bodied taste of the pork fat mince. The meal is very filling but reasonably priced at ¥450. We also recommend “tamago no karayaki”, a Japanese-style crepe, and chicken prepared on a hot griddle. All dishes are well seasoned and are outstanding with alcohol. The restaurant was originally a chicken specialty shop, so the freshness and deliciousness of the chicken have established reputations.
The restaurant is always crowded with regular customers because they are only enough seats for six or seven customers, but kashimin-yaki is also available for take-out.
Popular for tiramisu and crepes. Also great for eating on the go.
Come here if you have a craving for sweets while sightseeing. Lunch is also delicious, but we also recommend crepes and tiramisu in a jar.
The restaurant has a full lineup of crepes from standard crepes to meal replacements. There are seven types of tiramisu in a jar, including plain, powdered green tea, black sesame, and Earl Grey flavors. Each tiramisu is carefully homemade using Kishiwada local fresh eggs and Japanese mascarpone and fresh cream. The special tiramisu is so popular that it pops up in events at department stores over Japan. Sofas make up most of the store seating, so you can settle down and relax. The store is perfectly suited for a break when you’re a little tired.
Crepes and tiramisu in a jar are also available for take-out, so they can also be enjoyed on the go.
